The main objectives of this phase are as follows.

o To develop a background paper that will help create an in-depth understanding of the minerals sector in Gujarat. This paper will cover the spatial distribution of mineral production (both large and small mines) in the state and also mineral-based industries.

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) under Jatropha Micromission is collecting Jatropha accessions from across the country and producing quality planting material of Jatropha based on oil content (30-40%). The programme is supported at 14 centres including a centralized facility for oil testing and molecular characterization. A total of 1500 acessions have been collected and superior quality accessions have been identified.

Nuclear energy research is well established in India and has contributed to several beneficial spin-off technologies in diverse fields such as water desalination, medicine and agriculture. The opening up of our nuclear energy industry to global cooperation is expected to substantially augment nuclear energy’s contribution to overall power generation in India. This expansion will be beneficial both with respect to its impact on our energy security needs, as well as in terms of addressing our climate change concerns.

Since 1999, TERI has been actively conducting the environment education examination and quiz programme GREEN Olympiad and TERRAQUIZ, respectively. The GREEN Olympiad, India’s first and the only national-level environment examination, and TERRAQUIZ, an environment quiz aired on television, is held annually in India and abroad. The examination in GREEN Olympiad is held in both Hindi and English, and it is open for classes 8 to 10.

The objective of this project is to advance the emerging concept of adaptive policy-making and thereby contribute to building the adaptive capacity and resilience of communities to climate change. Adaptive policies are considered as those that are robust across a variety of possible futures (rather than optimized for a specific future) and have the ability to adapt to circumstances as they emerge over time.

TERI organized a two day exposure programme for DFID, India officials that focussed on various aspects of climate change. The programme sensitized the participants with latest developments on various issues related to climate change with a focus on science, mitigation, adaptation and policy aspects.

The Samaspur Bird Sanctuary located near Salon in Rae Bareli District of Uttar Pradesh comprises six wetlands; five of which are inter-connected and the sixth is a standalone water-body. The sanctuary, which hosts more than 250 resident and migratory birds and 46 fish species including several threatened species, is known for the migratory waterfowls visiting these wetlands during the winter season for feeding, nesting and breeding. A large population of the Indian Sarus crane, an endangered bird species venerated in Hindu mythology, also inhabit the area.
