Nuclear energy research is well established in India and has contributed to several beneficial spin-off technologies in diverse fields such as water desalination, medicine and agriculture. The opening up of our nuclear energy industry to global cooperation is expected to substantially augment nuclear energy’s contribution to overall power generation in India. This expansion will be beneficial both with respect to its impact on our energy security needs, as well as in terms of addressing our climate change concerns. Along side these benefits policy makers should take seriously public concerns of safety in respect of nuclear energy use. They must also bear in mind the legal and regulatory hurdles that need to be addressed if they wish to promote private sector participation in large scale nuclear energy deployment.
In order to engage potential stake holders in a broad public discussion on nuclear energy development in India, the Indian Nuclear Society (INS), the most prominent professional society of nuclear scientists and engineers in the country and TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute) New Delhi are jointly organising a one-day national workshop on “Nuclear energy development in India: Addressing climate change, public perception and large scale deployment” on 13 August 2009 at TERI, New Delhi.
