The Green School Initiative launched in April 2017 by Tata Steel Foundation and TERI aims to promote behaviour change for environmental conservation and develop resilience among vulnerable communities through driving school ecosystems by exploring curriculum linkages, operationalizing action projects and capacity-building activities on four broad themes: Energy, Water, Forest & Biodiversity, and Waste and their interlinkages with Climate Change and Sustainable Development Goals Agenda 2030.
Digital Twin for Enhanced Electric Distribution Grid Operation and Management
November 17, 2023
| Energy
| Electricity and Renewables
A digital twin is a dynamic, real-time replica of the physical distribution grid. It brings together data from various sources to provide a comprehensive view of power flows, and grid behaviours. This project will be the first demonstration in India, at a useful scale, of applying cloud-based digital twin technology to an electrical distribution grid. The aim is to improve the reliability and cost-effectiveness of an emerging economy distribution network. The pilot is taking place in Delhi under the BRPL licensee region.
COOL IT FOR THE CLIMATE: Embracing Sustainable Cooling
November 17, 2023
| Energy Efficiency
In a world grappling with the escalating impacts of climate change, sustainable cooling practices have emerged as a critical area of focus. Refrigerators and air conditioners, two common household appliances, contribute significantly to global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Adoption of sustainable cooling habits among consumers is essential to mitigate the environmental impact of these appliances and ensure a more sustainable future.
Decarbonizing industries in India: A holistic approach for industry transition

The objective of the project is to accelerate transition of Indian industry sector to a low carbon pathway by an integrated approach which focuses on decarbonizing the energy intensive industries (steel, cement) including associated value chains.
Energy efficiency improvements among small and medium textile units in India
November 7, 2023
| Energy
A study on ‘energy efficiency improvements among small and medium scale textile units in India’ was carried out by TERI targeting the three major energy consuming sub-sectors within textile industry, namely spinning, weaving and wet processing. The study covered surveys/interviews of textile units and key stakeholders across five clusters: Ahmedabad, Bhiwandi, Coimbatore, Surat and Tirupur.
The priorities of the study were:1) ensuring maximum impact in terms of energy savings (targeting the most relevant processes and improvement opportunities),
INDIA: TRANSFORMING TO A NET-ZERO EMISSIONS ENERGY SYSTEM
October 26, 2023
In order to have a long term projections for the growth and its impact, it is required to have a detailed analysis of past event (time-series analysis), as a small change today possess a large implication potential in future.
Based on the recent and rapid development in the Indian economy, it is required to incorporate all the changes happening into the exiting model/tool for long term analysis.
India transforming to a net-zero emissions energy system A call to action to 2030
October 26, 2023
The report builds on the previous TERI-Shell’s jointly developed Sketch scenarios that explored technological pathways for India to achieve net zero by 2050.
Since, this is a decisive decade which will have a significant impact on India’s road to its 2070 net zero emissions target, the current report builds on the previous study, and explores the decarbonization strategies of power, transport, buildings, and agriculture sectors to 2030.
Renewable Energy Transition in South Asia: Role of Regional Energy Trade
October 25, 2023
This report delves into the implications of regional energy trade on increasing the proportion of renewable energy consumption within the overall energy usage or the shift away from fossil fuel-centric economies in South Asia. The study employs data from seven nations, employing the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) model to evaluate the consequences on economic growth and societal well-being within these analysed countries.
