Rehabilitation of mined out areas is a major issue in sustainable development of mining. Revegetation is one of the processes used for rehabilitation. Increasingly, as attention is focused on beneficial land uses, there is a trend in adopting and advocating revegetation which is useful to the local community. Our focus group research in Phase II also indicated that local communities would like to grow fruit trees on mine dumps both for consumption and for the market.

The objective of this study is to develop an energy technology vision until the year 2030, by using an integrated and analytical framework for facilitating optimal exploitation of energy resources and appropriate technology deployment in the context of energy efficiency, access, affordability, security of supply, and financial and environmental sustainability. The study focuses on both existing as well as new and emerging technological options right from the point of extraction and procurement of energy resources upto their conversion and end-use stage.

The objective is to assist the Arunachal University in preparing the State Development Report for the state. The study has been commissioned by the Planning Commission. TERI is involved in preparing the chapters of the following sectors: power, transport and communications, and environment.

The main objectives are as follows. (i) Assess the current situation in sanitation, health, and hygiene. This includes research into the behavioural aspects of the existing sanitation and hygiene practices, the perceived barriers to an improved sanitation and hygiene status, and identification of triggers that motivate behaviour change (at the individual and communal levels).

Under this project rooftop rainwater harvesting systems will be constructed in five schools in Bangalore and awareness on water conservation is being created among students in thirteen schools. Technical workshops on design of rooftop rainwater harvesting systems will be conducted for about 200 children and in each of the thirteen schools fortnightly assembly programmes and other awareness drives focusing on water conservation will be conducted.

The objectives are (1) to convert fly ash overburdens to better substrates for plant growth; (2) to identify tree/undercover species used for afforestation based on the economic importance (herbaceous plants, foliage plants, fuel wood, pulp and paper, etc.); (3) to address environmental concerns suitably; (4) to convert ash ponds and townships in aesthetically superior greens thereby achieving ecological advantages.

The Japan Consulting Institute proposes to set up a CDM (clean development mechanism) Promotion Platform Scheme, which will provide an opportunity for interaction between the EPC suppliers possessing unique technology in the areas of energy conservation and air pollution control in Japan and industries in India that may want to use these technologies to develop the CDM projects. The platform will also identify potential investors who want to invest in particular CDM projects.

The objective is to understand the nature and mechanism of membrane fouling during the ultrafiltration of multi-component feed streams. This would form the basis for the design of low fouling polymeric membranes capable of withstanding variations in feed composition including shock loads of foulants. The experiment work will involve functionalization of membrane surfaces using heterogeneous photo initiated graft copolymerization.
