Comparative study of dielectric and mechanical properties of HDPE-MWCNT-SiO2 nanocomposites
T A Praveen, Rajan J Sundara, R R N Sailaja
| 2016
Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT?s) and Nano-Silicon dioxide (SiO2) reinforced HDPE composites have been developed. The MWCNT and Nano- SiO2 filler content was varied up to 5 wt% in HDPE with the addition of Polyethylene grafted glycidyl methacrylate compatibilizer and 3-aminopropyl triethoxy silane coupling agent. The dielectric and mechanical properties of the HPDE nanocomposites have been investigated in this study. Addition of MWCNT and Nano-SiO2 are observed to enhance the tensile strength and modulus of the nano-composites.
Communities and Sustainable Practices: Lessons from the Traditional Fisher Communities
Yatish Lele, Parasnis Anjali
| 2016
Traditional fishing communities have always relied on set of codes and practices, developed over ages. Although the penetration of modernized fishing techniques has helped increase the income, it has also led to overexploitation. This paper is about the sustainable practices followed by the traditional fishers in India which ensures environmental sustainability. The possibility of these practices getting merged with the current practices and policies to achieve sustainability is discussed.
Assessment of Biomass Potential and Current Status of Bio-fuels and Bioenergy Production in India
Joshi Piyush, Sharma Neeta, Sarma Priyangshu Manab
| 2016
There is the growing demand for biofuel and bio based energy due to the depletion of the conventional fossil based resources. Thus, the estimation of the current resources of these alternatives and their future availability become imperative to maintain a sustainable supply in the future. The information presented in this study was collected through an intensive search and consultation of existing databases, which was thereafter corroborated by coordinating with authenticated sources of several national and state level departments, universities, institutes and agencies.
Aquatic plant Azolla as the universalfeedstock for biofuel production
Miranda Ana F, Biswas Bijoy, Ramkumar Narasimhan, Singh Rawel,Kumar Jitendra,James Anton, Roddick Felicity, Lal Banwari, Subudhi Sanjukta, Bhaskar Thallada, Mouradov Aidyn
| 2016
The quest for sustainable production of renewable and cheap biofuels has triggered an intensive search for domestication of the next generation of bioenergy crops. Aquatic plants which can rapidly colonize wetlands are attracting attention because of their ability to grow in waste waters and produce large amounts of biomass. Representatives of Azolla species are some of the fastest growing plants, producing substantial biomass when growing in contaminated water and natural ecosystems.
Approaches to low carbon development in China and India
Kedia Shailly
| 2016
Low carbon development has gained policy prominence and is a concern of both environment and development policy globally and in China and India. This paper discusses the role of China and India as important global actors in light of development imperatives in the two countries. The article then looks at emerging approaches in the two countries related to financing, science, technology & innovation policy, and sub-national actions. The objective is to review efforts in China and India for contributing to learning experiences for other countries.
An overview on emerging bioelectrochemical systems (BESs): Technology for sustainable electricity, waste remediation, resource recovery, chemical production and beyond.
Bajracharya Suman, Sharma Mohita, Mohanakrishna Gunda, Dominguez Benneton Xochitl, Strik avid PBTB, Sarma Priyangshu, Pant Deepak
| 2016
Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) are unique systems capable of converting chemical energy into electrical energy (and vice-versa) while employing microbes as catalysts. Such organic wastes including low-strength wastewaters and lignocellulosic biomass were converted into electricity with microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Likewise, electrical energy was used to produce hydrogen in microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) or other products including caustic and peroxide. BES were also designed to recover nutrients, metals or removal of recalcitrant compounds.
Agricultural Trade in South Asia: How important are the Trade Barriers?
Nanda Nitiya
| 2016
Greater intra-regional trade in agricultural goods by reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers is often considered to be a good way of promoting rural development and improving food security in South Asia. Openness to trade of agricultural sector varies across South Asian countries, yet agricultural trade plays a crucial role as, in many countries, its share in exports is reasonably high, apart from the fact that most of them are net food-importing countries.
Acidic Potassium Permanganate Chemiluminescence for the Determination of Antioxidant Potential in Three Cultivars of Ocimum basilicum
Srivastava Shivani, Adholeya Alok, Conlan Xavier A, Cahill David M
| 2016
Ocimum basilicum, a member of the family Lamiaceae, is a rich source of polyphenolics that have antioxidant properties. The present study describes the development and application of an online HPLC-coupled acidic potassium permanganate chemiluminescence assay for the qualitative and quantitative assessment of antioxidants in three cultivars of O. basilicum grown under greenhouse conditions. The chemiluminescence based assay was found to be a sensitive and efficient method for assessment of total and individual compound antioxidant potential.
Challenges Ahead: WTO and Food Security
Nanda Nitya
| 2017
At the forthcoming World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference in Argentina, the global community must address real subsidies in agriculture rather than a theoretical construct on the measure of support that also includes impacts of subsidies in rich countries and the tariffs that are duly allowed.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change has notified the revised standards for coal-based Thermal Power Plants in the country, with the primary aim of minimizing pollution. These standards are proposed to be implemented in a phased manner. Thermal power plants are categorized into 3 categories, namely those:- (i) Installed before 31st December, 2003 (ii) Installed after 2003 upto 31st December, 2016 and (iii) Installed after 31st December, 2016.
