Waste to Resource
Urban areas in India alone generate more than 100,000 metric tonne of solid waste per day, which is higher than many countries' total daily waste generation and this waste crisis is rapidly intensifying. The government alone can't curb this menace, every colony, high rise apartment and even individual houses have to come up with their waste management solution on their requirement.
An initiative in this direction has been taken by the residents of Sandeep Vihar, a high-rise apartment in Bangalore housing 1300 residents. Rajani Mani, one of the residents of Sandeep Vihar took the initiative and started a Solid Waste Management drive in her apartment. Sandeep Vihar collects around 1000 kg of solid waste per day, they have set up their down digesters to break down the waste into compost which they use in their kitchen gardens.
As Rajani says, "here we are challenging the notion of waste, one man's waste is another man's gold, we turn waste into a resource" - A truly inspiring initiative.
The film is produced under the series called "The Future We Want" which tells stories about individuals and communities in urban India who are demonstrating alternate ways of living and showing us the path towards a clean and sustainable future.
