Technologies and Policies for Control of Methane Emissions from Animal Wastes
The primary objective of the project is to identify the areas of intervention for methane recovery and facilitate collaboration and cooperation between bilateral, multilateral and private sector companies involved in manufacturing of systems and equipments, local and international financial and research institutions which would lead to development of implementable methane recovery projects. The secondary project objective is penetration of the methane recovery projects in large scale for improvement of local and global energy and environment and for benefiting the local community by providing improved health. To achieve these objectives, some of the prime issues in this sector have to be dealt with which include: ? Inventory of methane emissions from different livestocks. ? Existing status and available technical and financial mechanisms ? Analysis of the barriers (financial, institutional and policy related) for large scale promotion of methane capture projects ? Creation of partnerships and networks between stakeholders involved in different Asian and developed countries such as US and Europe ? Potential for biomethanation for clean development mechanism and energy security There is limited information available on the potential of methane recovery from different sources across different regions of the country. Use of appropriate methodologies for capture of methane from the varied sources of animal wastes is essential for assessing the potential sectors and hence the hotspots for implementing anaerobic digestion projects. Further, there is an increased need for adoption of efficient technologies for methane capture which requires financial support along with suitable policy and institutional structure. There has been considerable support from the Government for implementation of biogas plants which has to be further strengthened for adoption of improved technology.
