Solid waste management in Annasandrapalya
The project aimed to address the problem of solid waste disposal by developing a SWM plan for the community of Annasandrapalya in eastern Bangalore and subsequently implementing this plan. This locality lies adjacent to a lake, which is being adversely affected by the indiscriminate disposal of garbage in and around it. There is no waste collection or disposal system in place and most residents throw their garbage near the lake boundary. A participatory approach was adopted for the development of the plan and the implementation is planned along similar lines, with the involvement of Intel volunteers, NSS student volunteers from Jyoti Nivas College and a locally resident NGO - APSA. An awareness workshop on decentralized waste management technologies has been conducted for the local corporators of the CMC where this locality is situated. A multi-party agreement is being arrived at to facilitate the door-to-door collection of the wastes and installation of an aerobic composting unit with a dry waste segregation centre close to this locality. Once the system is operational, awareness programmes will be conducted for the residents, highlighting the need for source segregation of wastes.
