Renewable energy-based rural electrification: The mini-grid experience from India
As part of the study, TERI will examine the renewable energy-based mini-grid experiences in India, especially solar PV and biomass based, implemented primarily under the Remote Village Electrification Programme and also Solar PV Demonstration Programme and the Village Energy Security Programme of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The objective is to optimally use smarter control of distributed energy sources combined with intelligent management of loads to improve efficiency and reliability of the overall system. This detailed case study will be complemented by analysis of experiences in other South Asian countries where micro-hydro-based mini-grids have been attempted to enhance electricity access. The study will also attempt to draw wider policy lessons learned on the impact of instutional reforms on rural electrification in India and South Asia specifically the impact of institutional reforms on the viability of renewables as an important option for expanding access to electricity.
