Parallel Event on Solar Water Heating Systems: Global Perspectives during DIREC 2010
The Delhi International Renewable Energy Conference (DIREC) 2010 is a part of initiative taken at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, acknowledging the significance of renewable energies for sustainable development ? especially for combating poverty and for environmental and climate protection. Delhi Conference, an international platform for government, private sector, and non-governmental leaders, is the 4th global ministerial - level conference on renewable energy. It is being hosted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India from October 26 ? 29, 2010 in New Delhi. DIREC?s international forum will endeavour to address the goal of advancing renewable energy for sustainable development.
Under Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, ambitious targets have been set to ensure that there is wide-scale penetration of solar water heating systems in domestic as well as industrial sectors. The goal, therefore, is to achieve 15 million sq. meters solar thermal collector area by 2017 and 20 million by 2022.
MNRE is also implementing a UNDP/GEF assisted project on ?Global Solar Water Heating Market Transformation and Strengthening Initiative: India Country Program.? The objective of the project is to accelerate and sustain the solar water heating market growth in India through a combination of financial and promotional incentives, and other support measures so as to conserve electricity and other fossil fuels, apart from peak load shaving in cities and towns.
This Parallel Event is being organized against the aforementioned backdrop, with an aim to bring together national and international players in the field.
