Mobility for development - case study in Bangalore

The objectives of the Mobility for Development project are to raise awareness of the importance of mobility as a driver for economic development, including mobility related supply chains from the developing to the developed world; to close the mobility divide through business initiatives for innovative companies concerned about the divide; and to propose sustainable mobility solutions for rapidly growing cities in the developing world, including active participation of businesses, governments and policy makers. The project aims to give an overview of the mobility situation in India and the state of Karnataka by discussing the socio-economic profile and the status of the transport sector. The role of mobility in economic and social development for the country is being analyzed. The mobility situation in Bangalore is being assessed against a set of goals and indicators established by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). As a case study, the mobility situation in Bangalore city is being analyzed under three heads i.e. (i) urban-rural connectivity around Bangalore; (ii) the mobility divide between the rich and the poor in the city; and (iii) the scope of virtual mobility solutions in a hi-tech city like Bangalore
