Examination of water quality, environmental sanitation, and capacity building in Swajal villages of Bundelkhand region, UP
The objective of the project is to ensure supply of safe water in all villages under the project. To accomplish this it was necessary to ensure continuous monitoring of water quality. This can be met through the following objectives:
- In Pipe water supply system in order to a) monitor water quality in Swajal villages (i.e., primary monitoring) and also collect and validate already monitored secondary data b) to monitor and check bacteriological parameter of each source through residual chlorine checked) to identify critical parameters which need rigorous monitoring e) to measure source discharge during summers so that if there is any variation from the past records, the variation could be taken note of and where required suitable measures could be taken. f) onsite training of village mechanic/community members in chlorination and in procurement of bleaching powder, chloroscope, dosing system as well as in checking residual chlorine. Since these members/ mechanics have already been trained during the initial phase, a cross-verification through enquiry would be made.
- In Handpump water supply system a) to ensure safe water supply through handpumps through primary water quality monitoring as well as collection and validation of secondary data (already in records) b) to test physical, chemical and bacteriological water quality parameters of the handpump water c) to assess the discharge from the handpump once, preferably during the summer months d) to assess the fall in the water level/table, if any, and recommend necessary remedial measures e) to identify critical parameters which need rigorous monitoring f) to monitor the water quality testing activities of VWSC, record keeping activity of the tests and analyse the test results so obtained. g) to raise community awareness on issues such as cleanliness of surrounding place where handpump is installed (sanitary awareness), and in case of any observed risk of pollution how to take necessary action, such as inform local health agencies, and concerned departments.
