Under the ambit of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, this issue brief explores the potential of a Japan –India partnership and examines the opportunities for shaping mutual ties through the Joint Crediting Mechanism.

India and Japan’s long-standing economic partnership forms a favourable precursor for the two countries to collaborate under Article 6 mechanisms of the Paris Agreement. Whereas high-end Japanese low-carbon and energy-efficient technologies would significantly contribute towards achieving India’s ambitious goals of mitigating and reducing emissions, the partnership would in turn give greater market access to Japanese technology in the latter’s growing domestic market. Under the ambit of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, this issue brief explores the potential of a Japan –India partnership and examines the opportunities for shaping mutual ties through the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM). As a bilateral mechanism that facilitates the diffusion of low-carbon technology, India's growing need for clean technologies might be met with support from Japan's JCM.
