Clipping the wrong end

A high level of fuel taxation is justified. It is better that imported fuels are highly taxed, consumption dampened and the benefits of that taxation are recycled back into the economy. Central and state governments should focus on reducing the long-term dependency of the Indian economy on imported fuels, through stronger public urban transport and infrastructure development for electric vehicles. Higher fuel taxes bring the resources to do so.
