Decentralised cold storage holds the key to not only reducing losses but also to rejuvenating agriculture and boosting rural employment. Decentralised cold storage systems are essential for intermediary storage at the local farm level. This area is still at a nascent stage in India and, therefore, has tremendous growth potential given the large production volume of perishable fruits, vegetables and dairy products. Cold storage facilities based on alternative power solutions, such as solar or biomass, could prove to be very useful for the farmers and Farmer Producers' Organisations.
