Virtual Roundtable on ‘Accelerating Net Zero Initiatives in Paper & Pulp Industry'
10th October 2023 | 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM
A virtual roundtable, focused on ‘Accelerating Net Zero Initiatives in Paper & Pulp Industry', is being held on October 10, 2023 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM in association with the India Net Zero Alliance initiative.
The heavy industries, namely iron & steel, cement (and concrete), petrochemicals, aluminium, fertilisers, and pulp & paper shall be providing the materials to support a modern economy. If India is to remain globally competitive and achieve sustainable growth, within the constraints of the environment, future industrial strategy should prioritise greater resource efficiency in the heavy industry sectors. There are several promising technology solutions which could support deeper decarbonisation of the HTA sectors, beyond that of improving energy efficiency or reducing demand. At a global level, it seems technically possible to reduce emissions from these sectors to near zero levels, although many of the technologies require further development to reach commercial scale.
Breakthrough technologies to decarbonize these ‘hard-to-abate’ sectors is the need of hour for India. Private Sector engagements, interventions and actions are crucial for enhanced opportunities for engagement on technology transfer and emission abatement pathways for hard to abate sectors.TERI’s ‘Industry Charter for Net Zero emissions Ambition by 2050’ facilitates this by bringing leading market players of the Indian Industry together. Under this voluntary pledge, companies have committed to pursue a set of vigorous decarbonisation measures and set an example for other industry peers to meet the Paris Agreement objectives.
The pulp and paper industry is among the top five most energy-intensive sectors globally. In 2019, the Indian pulp and paper sector alone contributed to approximately 30.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, accounting for 1.09% of the country's total net greenhouse gas emissions. The average emission intensity for the Indian pulp and paper industry stands at 1.58 metric tons of CO2 equivalent per metric ton of paper produced. As paper production continues to rise, it becomes imperative to take proactive measures to significantly reduce the emission intensity of production. As the industry continues to grow, it has the unique opportunity to demonstrate leadership in achieving carbon neutrality, setting an example for others to follow.
Through this Net Zero Energy Roadmap: Paper & Pulp webinar, we delve into the energy landscape, carbon emissions, and the potential for achieving carbon neutrality in the Indian pulp and paper sector.
