Transitioning towards low-carbon and climate resilient pathways by 2050
TERI discusses India's long-term strategy including technology requirements, key intervention areas across sectors, the challenges and opportunities

In 2023, global progress towards the objectives of the Paris Agreement (PA) will be formally assessed. Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs), which combine human and earth systems to help understand how key aspects of society may evolve in the future and how they might interact with a changing climate, have played an important role in identifying pathways that link strategies for achieving long-term goals with near-term actions and milestones.
ENGAGE, Exploring National and Global Actions to reduce Greenhouse gas Emissions, project used IAMs to produce a new generation of pathways that incorporate cutting-edge social science knowledge to reduce social and political challenges to achieving the Paris Agreement. Meeting the objectives of the ENGAGE project requires multi- and inter-disciplinary expertise. Thus, the project will be carried out by a global consortium of leading Integrated Assessment Modelling (IAM) teams from both Europe and non-European countries (Brazil, India, China, Japan, USA, Russia, Korea, Mexico, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam).
TERI is part of the ENGAGE consortium and developing national pathways for India using its IAM model TERI-MARKAL to contribute to global pathways.
In the event, TERI along with other ENGAGE consortium members presented broad finding from various national and global scenarios to discuss the status of current policies/NDCs, peaking of emissions and on achieving the net zero goal.
Further, TERI presented a guiding document on framing India's Long-Term Strategy (LTS). The framework encapsulated the urgent need and benefit of developing an LTS, other than the voluntary commitment under Article 4.19 of the Paris Agreement. It charted out the most essential pillars that will enable the development and implementation of a strong long-term strategy, the interdependencies in their roles, and key decisions to be taken under each pillar.
