Regional Workshop on 'Innovative and Sustainable Energy Technologies for Developing Countries: Opportunities and Challenges'

TERI in association with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) organized a 'Regional Workshop on Innovative and Sustainable Energy Technologies for Developing Countries: Opportunities and Challenges' from 28 - 30 May 2014, at Taj Mahal Hotel in New Delhi, India. The aim of the workshop was to provide an overview of the role of technologies and enabling regulatory frameworks in addressing key concerns related to sustainable energy development in developing countries to the government officers from 12 Asian partner countries (Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Mongolia, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan). Two nominated candidates from each of the 12 partner countries participated in the workshop.

The workshop aimed at providing the participants an overview of the role of technologies and enabling regulatory frameworks in addressing key concerns related to sustainable energy development in developing countries. The objectives of the workshop included improving the understanding of different renewable energy technologies including wind, solar PV, solar CSP, biomass etc., enhancing the knowledge regarding smart grids technologies and their role in improving efficiency of energy sector in developing countries, looking at various regulatory and policy initiatives for sustainable energy development, exploring means and technologies to achieve energy access; and sharing information and lessons learnt within the partner countries in Central, South and Southeast Asia.

The workshop focused on practical solutions and case studies in specific sectors through lecture sessions, case studies and interactive discussions. Sessions were taken by sector experts from TERI, TERI University, REC and ISGF. A field visit to TERI Gram was also undertaken to showcase the application of renewable based technologies. As part of this workshop, each invited country also gave a presentation on the experiences of their countries in renewable based technologies, smart grid, policy and regulatory framework, etc. including best practices to overcome the challenges faced.
