India's automobile sector has been one of the fastest growing sectors in recent times. Since it is heavily dependent on various natural resources, future growth will be associated with increased demand for raw materials. In the presence of dwindling resource availability as well as environmental and climate change related challenges, there is not only an urgent need for increased awareness among stakeholders but also a need for a model that would help in resource use sustainability in the sector. TERI is undertaking a project ‘Resource Efficiency Initiative India: A case study of the Automotive sector’, supported by Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) with GIZ as the lead implementing partner.  The project will not only assess the current and future demand for resources, but also explore ways that would improve material use across the value chain and implement the same.

As a part of the project TERI is organizing a workshop on ‘Resource Use and Efficiency Potential in Indian Automobile Industry', on 30th May at India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi. The objective of the workshop is to present some of the initial findings and understand from stakeholders about resource related challenges, opportunities and their initiatives.
