Capacity building training program for the officials of West Bengal Pollution Control Board on ‘emission inventory, source apportionment and carrying capacity study”

n order to understand the sources contributing towards air pollution and prepare a roadmap to achieve the target under the NCAP, West Bengal Pollution Control (WBPCB) had invited TERI to carry out an updated comprehensive Air Pollution Source Apportionment Study and Atmospheric Carrying Capacity for Kolkata and Howrah Municipal Corporation areas. Apart from assessing the air pollution levels in these two cities, the scope of the study also includes capacity building training program to develop knowledge of local level pollution control regulators and state level institutions. In this regard, this training program was organized with the objective to develop basic concept on need and purpose to carry out air pollution source apportionment and atmospheric carrying capacity study. Representatives from WBPCB namely senior scientist, senior environmental engineer, senior laboratory scientist and senior project associates had attended the training program. Topics such as selection and measurement of ambient air quality monitoring, source emission monitoring, QA/QC and analysis of air quality data, developing of sectoral air pollution emission inventory, concept of receptor and dispersion modelling in air pollution source apportionment and basic concept and analysis of atmospheric carrying capacity were covered under the course module of training program. Apart from basic learning, visit to various environmentally sustainable facilities of TERI RETREAT and visit to supersite- an air quality measurement site having facilities such as mobile air quality monitoring van and other scientific instruments meant for real time source apportionment study to identify the source of air pollution in the national capital were organized for WBPCB officials.
